Should you collect pocket WiFi at the airport or have it delivered to your hotel? Will your reservation still work after a late flight?
Choose airport pickup when your booked collection point fits your arrival route and timing. Choose hotel delivery when the hotel accepts the parcel and you can reach it without the router.
A late arrival needs a confirmed alternative, not an assumption that every airport counter stays open.
This guide explains what to check before booking and what to do after landing. It uses official information and planning suggestions, not a personal pickup trial.

Airport pickup or hotel delivery: choose by your arrival plan

Start with the point where you can actually collect the equipment. Then compare the total price.
| Arrival situation | Option to compare |
|---|---|
| Your reserved counter is on a workable route and open | Airport pickup |
| Late arrival or little margin before closing | Confirmed alternative pickup or hotel delivery with backup data |
| Hotel accepts parcels under your booking name | Hotel delivery |
| Unattended accommodation | A provider-approved staffed collection point |
| Short flight connection | A collection point you can reach without missing your onward flight |
My planning priority would be the arrival route, not a small difference in the daily rate. A router at an unreachable counter cannot help with your first journey.
Airport pickup can add a stop when children are tired or your bags are heavy. Hotel delivery removes that airport stop but leaves the journey to the hotel without the rented router.
If only one phone needs internet, a compatible SIM, eSIM, or roaming plan may be simpler. Read our eSIM vs Pocket WiFi guide.
Confirm the airport, terminal, and collection point

An airport name is not a complete pickup instruction. Save the terminal, floor, counter name, and map.
- Check the arrival airport and terminal.
- Match the collection point to your reservation.
- Confirm the floor and public-access route.
- Save the provider’s current map offline.
A counter selling WiFi is not necessarily the counter holding your package. Show the booking confirmation rather than asking for any available router.
A provider may use a partner counter with a different company name. Follow the instructions for your reservation.
For example, Japan Wireless identifies partner handling counters in its collection guide. Bookings and changes still belong with the rental provider.
If the collection point is in another terminal, check whether you can reach it and how long the transfer takes. Include luggage and your onward travel.
Do not assume a counter inside a restricted area is accessible from your arrival route. Confirm the exact location before paying.
Separate landing time from collection time

Your scheduled landing time is not the time you will stand at the collection desk. Immigration, baggage, customs, and walking come first.
There is no single arrival buffer that works for every flight. Consider the closing time and the uncertainty in your own route.
A simple timing check
Imagine your flight is scheduled to land at 21:30 and the booked counter closes at 22:00. Those times are hypothetical.
A 30-minute gap is not confirmation that you can collect the router. If the arrival process takes longer, the reservation needs another workable arrangement.
Also check your last train, bus, or onward flight. A pickup plan that costs you your transport connection may be impractical.
Our Japan airport arrival guide explains the wider arrival sequence.
What to do for late arrivals and delayed flights

Confirm the fallback before departure if collection is uncertain. A return box is not an after-hours pickup service.
Before you book
Give the provider your flight number, arrival date, airport, and terminal. Ask whether the selected collection point works for that arrival.
Ask what happens if you miss closing time. Do not assume the order automatically moves to your hotel or another terminal.
- Can the collection location be changed?
- What is the change deadline?
- Are there extra charges or rental-day consequences?
- What is the supported alternative if pickup is missed?
When a delay is announced
Contact the provider through the channel listed on your confirmation. Include the order number and updated flight details.
Keep its reply available offline. Unless a change is confirmed, do not treat a request as an approved rerouting.
Prepare suitable mobile data or an offline route to your accommodation. Public WiFi can help where available, but should not be your only backup.
For overnight arrangements, check the hotel’s reception hours separately. Successful parcel delivery does not guarantee that you can collect it from staff overnight.
Narita, Haneda, and Kansai: avoid terminal assumptions

Use your flight’s actual terminal and your provider’s current map. Do not copy another traveler’s pickup point without checking.
Narita
Check the terminal named on the flight and the terminal named on the rental order. If they differ, resolve the transfer before booking.
For the journey onward, read our Narita Airport to Tokyo guide.
Haneda
Do not assume every international arrival uses the same collection location. Match the flight details to a supported counter for your order.
Check late-night onward transport too. Our Haneda Airport to Tokyo guide helps you compare the journey.
Kansai
Confirm the terminal and whether a transfer is required. A short connection leaves less room for a separate equipment collection.
This guide does not provide a universal counter-hours table. The hours that matter are those of the exact point accepted for your reservation.
Order deadlines are different from opening hours

An open counter does not prove your order can be prepared in time. Check the reservation deadline as well.
Deadlines can differ by location, product, collection method, and stock. Postal delivery also needs preparation and transit time.
Japan Wireless advertises short-notice collection at some locations subject to stock. Its guide also has location-specific lead times.
Do not read a same-day offer as permission to walk up at every airport. Ask about your exact date and location.
NINJA WiFi publishes its own airport collection conditions. Those rules should not be used for a Japan Wireless reservation, even when a partner counter name looks familiar.
Check deadlines in Japan time. Pay attention to whether a stated day refers to the calendar date rather than a rolling number of hours.
If your flight lands after midnight, use the arrival date in Japan when choosing the pickup date.
Are pickup lockers open all night?
Not necessarily. NINJA WiFi’s Haneda locker guide lists designated collection slots and an advance-order deadline.
Confirm that your booking includes the locker service. A Japan Wireless order handled by a partner counter does not automatically qualify.
How to arrange hotel delivery

Confirm acceptance with the hotel before choosing delivery. An accommodation address alone is not enough.
- Use the full hotel name and postal address.
- Match the recipient to the hotel booking name.
- Provide the correct check-in and rental dates.
- Confirm parcel storage and any hotel handling charge.
Ask the hotel whether it accepts and stores a rental parcel for an arriving guest. Confirm how you will collect it if reception has limited hours.
If another family member made the hotel reservation, make the names easy for staff to match. Follow the provider’s recipient instructions.
Check tracking when supplied, then ask reception for the parcel at check-in. A shipping notice is not proof that the hotel has received it.
Do not assume a courier can deliver at an exact requested hour. NINJA WiFi’s delivery guidance explains its delivery limitations.
If you change hotels
Request a change before the provider’s deadline and confirm whether the parcel has been dispatched. Get the accepted delivery details in writing.
Do not rely on the original hotel forwarding it. That may add delay or cost and needs a separate agreement.
Airbnb, apartments, and unattended accommodation

Check the provider’s rule for the actual accommodation type. A private-residence delivery option does not automatically include every short-term rental.
Japan Wireless currently states that Airbnb delivery is unavailable. Ask for a supported alternative collection arrangement.
For another provider, confirm who receives the parcel and what happens when nobody is there. Do not borrow Japan Wireless’s rules as a universal policy.
A post-office collection also needs a supported address, opening hours, and the provider’s booking process. Do not enter an arbitrary post office as your destination.
Keep internet available before you receive the router

You may need directions and messages before collecting your rental. Hotel delivery leaves the airport-to-hotel journey uncovered by that router.
- Save the hotel address and transport route.
- Download the pickup map and confirmation.
- Prepare a compatible mobile-data backup if needed.
- Keep provider support details offline.
Check activation timing, device compatibility, and charges for any backup SIM, eSIM, or roaming plan. A data-only product may not include calls or SMS.
If parents separate during arrival, each group needs its own way to navigate. The router helps only those within its usable WiFi range.
Use our Japan SIM card guide to check the alternatives.
What to bring and check at collection

Follow the identification instructions on your confirmation. Save them before relying on airport WiFi.
Japan Wireless’s guide tells customers to present the passport and tracking details at the designated airport collection point. Other providers may request different information.
- Have the confirmation and required identification ready.
- Match the package to your order.
- Check the listed equipment and accessories.
- Connect a device and test internet access.
- Save the return instructions and support contact.
If the package is missing or a device will not connect, contact the rental provider. A handling counter may not be able to change the contract.
Keep the equipment pouch and return materials together. Test other family devices before leaving for separate activities.
Compare the full booking cost and conditions

Compare arrangements that you can actually use. Then add rental charges, applicable delivery or collection fees, and selected protection.
Include backup-data costs and extra travel needed to collect equipment elsewhere. A missed pickup can change the practical total.
Check cancellation and location-change rules before paying. Late collection or an early return does not automatically reduce the rental charge.
Japan Wireless counts rental periods by calendar date. Confirm the billed dates and any proposed change with the provider.
Only use a discount accepted for your product and dates at checkout. An old promotion may have expired.
For the broader package trade-offs, read our Japan Wireless review.
Once your collection arrangement works, compare the actual rental quote.
Check dates, pickup options, and total rental cost
Pickup and return are separate decisions

Confirm the return method before leaving the collection point. Picking up at a counter does not mean you can return there.
Japan Wireless instructs postal return in Japan using its supplied prepaid envelope. Its FAQ says not to leave equipment at the hotel or an airport pickup counter.
Other providers may offer different return counters, boxes, or delivery methods. Use the rules for your own booking.
Japan Wireless’s official pages give different return deadlines. Confirm the deadline and any late fee for your booking.
Plan postal return before airport security where applicable. If departing from a different airport, check its available return route in advance.
Keep another way to access tickets and travel information after handing back the router. Pack every required accessory and keep proof of return when available.
Pocket WiFi pickup FAQ

Can I collect pocket WiFi after midnight?
Only if the specific service supports collection at that time. An open airport or an accessible return box does not establish after-hours pickup.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Contact the provider with the order number and updated arrival details. A location change or alternative delivery needs confirmation.
Can my hotel receive the router before I check in?
Possibly, if the hotel accepts parcels and the provider supports that delivery. Confirm the booking name, dates, storage, and collection arrangements.
Can I order on the day I arrive?
Some services offer short-notice orders at selected locations. Stock and deadlines still apply, so confirm the actual order rather than assuming availability.
Can I return it to the pickup counter?
Only when your provider permits that method. Japan Wireless uses postal return and says its pickup counters do not accept equipment returns.
Your pickup checklist before payment

Confirm a workable collection plan before paying. You should know how you will receive the router even if the flight runs late.
- Match the flight, terminal, and collection point.
- Check opening hours and the order deadline.
- Confirm a fallback for a missed pickup.
- Prepare directions and internet before collection.
- Check total cost, changes, and return rules.
If Japan Wireless’s supported collection arrangement fits your trip, check the final quote and booking details.
